Chiesa Matrice Nuova - Castelbuono
Chiesa Matrice Nuova - Castelbuono
At the beginning of the XVII century, the building of a bigger church consecrated to Mary' nativity begun, being the old Mother Church inadequate for the increased population: the people distinguished - and still continue to do so - the two main local churches, calling the first one Madrice Vecchia (old mother) and the second one Madrice Nuova (new mother). The church, opened for worship in 1701, 100 years after the laying of the first stone, fall to ruin in the 16 of March 1820 because of the earthquake of 25 February 1819. It was rebuilt to the present form in 1830. The architectural complex, deprived of its splendid dome and of the two bell towers facade, never rebuilt, presents a neoclassic style made by the finest Castelbuono art workshops in XIX century. The building rises spacious and bright, with its latin cross and three naves, supported by thirteen stucco coated columns. Between two of these columns there is the great organ made by Pasquale Pergola. Besides, the church preserves a 400' hanging cross, a '500 triptych, '700 paintings by Sicilian artists.
