Castelbuono

Castelbuono owes its origins to the Ventimiglia family, lords of Geraci County, that decided at the beginning of 1300 to build a castle on the hill overlooking the ancient byzantine village of "Ypsigro". Near the sea, Castlbuono grew up in the Madonie foothills, on a pleasant valley inhabited since Neolithic age and rich in greek, roman, arab and byzantine remains. In 1316 Francesco I dei Ventimiglia, count of Geraci and relative of Frederik II, built here a castle. This promoted the growth of the settlement which just 150 years later will be considered the most lively center among Ventimiglia possessions.
