Baglio Castellana

The Baglio Castellana is a feudal palace seat of Cutelli Count and its outbuildings.

In the middle of the present town, this building has a quadrangular plan with internal court. The building complex includes the Mary College with inner colonnade cloister and the Curch of the Holy Souls. The palace or castle was raised to the second floor and approximately extended for 150 meters to the east. In the middle of the second floor there was a nice courtyard with columns supporting arches at whom feet there were small flowerbeds and in the center, next to a tree, was located a water well; a small stairs from the courtyard led to the family apartments. North of the imposing building rose the rooms used as stables, haystacks, warehouses, kitchens and watering place; a series of rectangular rooms surrounded the large courtyard, called nowdays "Baglio di Castellana". The castle and the warehouse could be reached through an high and large entrance; in the middle of the "Baglio" was located a large well which collected, and stil collects the spring water coming from the slopes of the overlying mountain range. In front of the entrance rose the "ribatteria", a sort of "company store". The palace, whose facade has been recently restored highlighting its stone structure, stands with its enormous size over the adjacent square, carrying out its function of attraction for tourists.
