G3 - Sentiero Geologico Urbano di Sclafani Bagni
Simple and appealing, located inside the historic centre and its immediate surroundings, this trail pushes to investigate on scientific aspects (geological, hydrological, geomorphological and petrographic), as well as historical aspects closely linked to the town construction. A journey to the discovery of geological events on rocky outcrops along the way, but also in the monuments and the historical centre building stone.Â
The cliff on which Sclafani Bagni town stands is a hogback kind relief, which, being tectonically bordered, assumes a singular morphology: the rocks that geologically constitute it represent a succession of basinal lithologies of the Imerese Domain, and they embrace a time period of over millions of years, ranging from over 200 to about 24 milion years ago. We find in lithostratigraphic succession from bottom to top: limestones with flint nodules and lists of Scillato formation (Late Triassic.), the dolomitic limestone of Fanusi formation (Late Triassic. Cretaceous.), marls and siliceous shales with intercalated calcareous rubble re-sedimented of the Crisanti formations (Late Lias - Late Cretaceous), the calcilutite and marl interbedded with calcareous reddish Caltavuturo formations (Late Cretaceous Oligocene).
