Lavatoio Medioevale

On the entrance gate to the stairs leading to the Medieval Wash Room is located a XVII century latin inscription: "The Cefalino flows here, the most healthy of all rivers, purer than silver, colder than snow". The legend says that Cefalino creek was generated by the tears of a nymph, who had repented after punishing her beloved betrayal with death. The lavatoio can be reached through the "Lumachella stairs" which goes down to the tanks semi-covered by a vaulted structure. The water comes out through three holes in the walls and flows through an escape way between rocks and reaches the sea. The town women continued to use the Medieval Wash Room until a few decades ago.
