Castello - Gratteri
Castello - Gratteri
The 7th century ancient castle rose on top on St. Vito rock, a strategic position where probably pre-existed a Byzantine and then Arab military garrison. The area where the castle is located is called Arcaria, from "archi" (arches), because the south-eastern wall was built on arched structure, nowadays demolished together with the rest of the building. The remains are unfortunately few, and only one of the three original entrances is still visible, the one which allowed to enter the Matrice Vecchia church through a gallery composed of several sixth round pointed arches. The remains of some wooden boards suggest the former existence of a drawbridge.
