Chiesa Madre - Pollina

The Mother Church in Pollina, was built toward the year 1000 on the bases of an ancient temple devoted to the God Apollo, it was built with only the central aisle and a bell tower separated by the rest of the body that acted as a lookout tower.

The vault and the floor were instead rebuilt during the first years of the 20th Century in '27 and '37. Inside the Church we can find some important pieces of art, such as the Virgin Mother with Child from Gagini, realised between 1514 and 1517 and according to the tradition inspired by a pagan statue dedicated to Diana or Cerere, a bas relief from Gagini, a baptismal font and a Pietà from Gagini school. In the Chapel of Nativity there is a marble group dated 1526 and created by Gagini, commissioned by Margherita Minneci. On the side walls, at the top, there are two artistic counters around the pipe organ, probably made by Johannes de Matta. Beside the first aisle, there are two decorated fonts with bas-reliefs of the of the century XVI. At the end of the left aisle there is the access to the Chapel of the Sacrament. The church is also a small museum that picks up works of art of the inclusive period between the 15th and 18th century. In the 17th century were then built the other two aisles and the presbytery with the two side chapels. These new elements were all built on the arches made to sustain the entire structure because of the gap in the ground.
