The Roman aqueduct Cornelio is a colossal structure of hydraulic engineering known as "Aquae Corneliae Ductus" and was built in the 1st-2nd century AD. It represents the largest hydraulic construction realized in Sicily by the Romans.
It was able to carry water from the source of Brucato to the center of the city over a distance of about 8 km, and thanks to the principle of communicating vessels allowed to cross significant height levels. The structure was developed in stretches of underground ducts and lancet arches; in the still remaining stretch, the arches were form a double order.
The aqueduct remained in operation until the early 800's.
